A Solo Female Road Trip Across Rwanda
Rwanda’s compact size, strong road links and varied landscapes make it well suited to an independent journey. In one trip, a solo traveller can move from Kigali’s lively neighbourhoods to Akagera’s savannah, the volcanoes of the north, Lake Kivu’s shores and the forests of Nyungwe.

Driving Safely Alone
Roads connecting Kigali with Rwanda’s main towns are generally in good condition. However, heavy rain can cause landslides, while many rural roads remain unlit after dark. Leave early and aim to reach each night’s accommodation before sunset.
Ask what roadside support is available outside Kigali and whether the vehicle may enter national parks. Rwanda National Police lists 112 for emergencies and 113 for traffic accidents.
Is Rwanda Suitable for Solo Female Travellers?
Crime levels are considered relatively low, although theft, bag-snatching and mugging can occur. Keep car doors locked, store belongings out of sight, arrange late transport in advance and avoid walking alone through quiet areas after dark.
Check current travel advice before visiting western border areas. A solo road trip should feel freeing rather than rushed. Short driving days, well-reviewed stays and time for spontaneous stops will make Rwanda’s hills, forests and lakes far more rewarding.
