A Guide to Visiting Rubavu

Set on Rwanda’s north-western shore of Lake Kivu, Rubavu combines a relaxed waterfront with outdoor activities and access to the country’s western highlands.

Its main urban centre is Gisenyi, the administrative seat of Rubavu District, although travellers commonly use “Rubavu” for the wider lakeside destination.

It works well as a 2- or 3-night stop, especially before or after visiting Volcanoes National Park.

Why Visit Rubavu?

Rubavu offers a quieter alternative to Kigali and Rwanda’s national parks. Visitors can walk along Lake Kivu, take boat or kayak trips, watch fishing boats at sunset and relax at waterfront cafés.

It is also the starting point of the Congo Nile Trail and a convenient base for Nyamyumba Hot Springs, coffee areas and Gishwati-Mukura National Park, making it suitable for families, couples and active travellers.

Getting There and Around

Rubavu is accessible by road from Kigali. Private transfers are the most convenient option, while buses from Nyabugogo Bus Park usually take around four to five hours.

The waterfront is walkable, and motorcycle taxis suit short journeys. For hot springs, coffee stations and nearby national parks, hiring a car or driver is more practical.

Enjoy the Lake Kivu Waterfront

The lakefront is Rubavu’s main attraction. Begin with a walk along the promenade and beach area in the morning or near sunset. Residents exercise beside the water, fishing crews prepare their boats, and cafés and hotels provide comfortable places to stop.

Swimming conditions may vary due to location, weather and local management. Use an established beach or hotel area, follow any posted instructions and ask locally before entering the lake. Avoid swimming alone or after dark.

Take a Boat Trip or Go Kayaking

A guided boat trip provides a wider view of the shoreline and surrounding hills. Short sunset outings suit a relaxed visit, while longer trips may include nearby bays or fishing communities. Choose an established operator, confirm the route beforehand and check that properly fitting life jackets are supplied.

Kayaking gives travellers a quieter way to observe birds, shoreline life and fishermen at work. Visit Rwanda particularly recommends exploring the Lake Kivu coastline by kayak. Beginners should go with a guide, as wind and rain can change conditions on the lake.

Explore the Congo Nile Trail

Rubavu marks the northern beginning of the Congo Nile Trail, which runs for 227 kilometres beside Lake Kivu towards Rusizi. Visit Rwanda estimates 5 days to complete the trail by bicycle or ten days on foot, although visitors with less time can arrange an individual stage.

Shorter sections still pass cultivated hills, villages, beaches and coffee-growing areas. The terrain can be demanding, so select a route suited to your fitness and arrange a guide when navigation, bicycle support or luggage transfer is required.

Visit Nyamyumba Hot Springs

The Nyamnumba Hot Springs are an immensely popular spot for tourists

Nyamyumba Hot Springs, known locally as Amashyuza, lie on the eastern shore of Lake Kivu. Rwanda’s official tourism material states that water in parts of the spring area can reach around 72°C.

Visit with someone familiar with the site, remain clear of visibly boiling or steaming channels and follow local guidance. The springs should not be entered independently simply because some areas appear shallow.

Discover Rubavu’s Coffee Country

The hills surrounding Lake Kivu form an important coffee-growing area. Some cooperatives and washing stations explain how coffee cherries are sorted, pulped, fermented, graded and dried.

Kinunu Washing Station, around 20 kilometres south of Gisenyi, is one recognised option. It can be reached by road, bicycle or boat and can be combined with part of the Congo Nile Trail. Coffee-harvest activity is generally greatest from February to May.

Take a Day Trip

Visit Rwanda places Rubavu about an hour from Volcanoes National Park, allowing travellers to combine time beside the lake with gorilla tracking or other activities around Musanze. Gorilla permits, guides and transport should be arranged well in advance.

Gishwati-Mukura National Park is another option for forest walks, birdwatching and primate experiences. The park consists of the separate Gishwati and Mukura forests and protects part of the biodiverse Albertine Rift.

Where to Stay and Eat

Rubavu offers guesthouses, small hotels and lakeside properties. Waterfront stays are convenient for restaurants, walks and boat trips, while Congo Nile Trail travellers may need luggage storage or bicycle support.

Local food includes grilled fish, brochettes, rice, chips and plantain. Carry Rwandan francs for cafés, markets, taxis and tips, as cards may not be widely accepted.

When to Visit Rubavu

Rubavu can be visited throughout the year, although outdoor activities are generally more manageable during Rwanda’s main dry period from June to mid-September. Occasional rainfall remains possible, and evenings beside the lake may feel cool.

Bring light layers, a waterproof jacket, sun protection, insect repellent, comfortable walking shoes and a reusable water bottle. Hikers and cyclists should also carry suitable active clothing and a small daypack.

Important Travel Note

Rubavu borders the Democratic Republic of the Congo. US and UK authorities warn that conflict may affect the area and border crossings can close suddenly.

Check official advice before travelling and avoid approaching or crossing the border casually.

How Long Should You Stay?

Two nights provide enough time for the waterfront, a boat trip and either the hot springs or a coffee visit. Three nights are better for adding a section of the Congo Nile Trail. Rubavu is most enjoyable with a flexible schedule and time to appreciate Lake Kivu rather than treating it only as a stop between national parks.
